This refugium is actually a Biotope for my seahorses. It containe now over 20 species of macroalgaes. The tree most imporatant ones are the Caulerpa profilata and Cheato, for nitrate export and the Ulva for Phosphate export. These algae are principally responsable for the reduction of these two elements in particular. They actually explode in the tank when one of these element is present in sufficient quantity. As an example turning OFF my GFO my Ulva will quadruple in less than a week. The others take care of other contaminents. Slower growers they provides for my tangs and are a great environment for my seahorses. To keep a diverse Macro algaes biotope i've learned the hard way that you need more than just nitrates and phosphates. Iodine is extremely important to most red algaes, some actually disolve if not enough is present in your water. Iron and manganese suplement is needed too. I've put sand to house worms and critters and bacterias a foothole. I used mud not for the miracle but for puraly a substrate and its bacterial content. water changes are very beneficial, in my book. Calcium is highly recomended for macroalgaes, high concentration is actually recomended for macro's as oppose to micro who do not like it. The little box seen here is the seahorse feeding box; $ 2.99 at staples with a Hammerhead magnet , after i've clean the tanks glasses it has second job! At $80 it better !!!LOL.
To see the measurements of the refugium look at my main Reef tank its all on the same system. So is the supplements , and feeding, it all happens at the same time .
